Although you may not realize it, when you watch Mixed Martial Arts competitions, many of the techniques used by the combatants are based off the martial art of Jiu-Jitsu. That’s because Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on takedowns, chokeholds and ground fighting, which are staples of MMA competition.
Jiu-Jitsu is also a recognized and effective self-defense technique whereby a smaller, weaker opponent can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger foe. Since most fights end up on the ground, learning the methods to take the fight there and be successful are vital for self-defese.
Learning to master these techniques can be fun, challenging and a great way to get on the path to better physical health. If you’re in the Austin, Texas area, the place to go to learn Jiu-Jitsu is the Vandry BJJ Academy. The Vandry Academy accepts and trains everyone from the novice student up to the advanced competitor, and both children and adults are welcome.
The Vandry BJJ Academy is owned and operated by William Vandry who is Texas’ highest ranked black belt in BJJ. William is an expert 2nd degree black belt who studied under the legendary BJJ Master, Carlos Machado and his brothers in Brazil. William was one of the first Texans to receive a black belt under Machado and he’s successfully competed in four Pan American World Championships earning two silver medals, one gold and one fourth place finish.
In addition to Jiu-Jitsu, the Vandry Academy also has classes in Muay Thai training that are taught by Brazilian brown belt and undefeated MMA competitor Robby Rabadi. These classes offer a friendly, un-intimidating environment so virtually anyone can become proficient in the techniques and retain what they’ve learned.
In addition to being a great method of self defense, Jiu-Jitsu can play a vital role in good physical health and improving strength.
